Spring wakes the garden from its winter slumber, inviting you to reconnect with nature. Here’s how to make the most of this season:
1. Refresh and Revive: Start by clearing garden debris and pruning dead wood to allow sunlight and air to reach new growth.
2. Feed the Soil: Improve soil health with compost or organic fertiliser, adding vital nutrients for healthy plants.
3. Plant Now:
- Annuals (petunias, marigolds, impatiens, begonias) bring instant colour.
- Perennials (agapanthus, daylilies, lavender) provide lasting structure and blooms.
- Vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, beans, herbs) are established well now.
Water newly planted items deeply to promote root growth.
4. Inspect Irrigation: Ensure that your irrigation system is free of leaks and blockages for effective watering.
5. Mulch for Moisture: Spread a 5–8 cm layer of mulch (bark or compost) to preserve soil moisture, keep roots cool, and suppress weeds.
6. Attract Wildlife: Encourage pollinators by introducing bird baths and planting bee-friendly flowers and wildflowers.
After tending to your garden, relax and take in the vibrant growth and colours your efforts have inspired for the summer ahead.
