October is one of the most exciting months in the garden. With warmer days, longer daylight hours and the first summer rains having

come, gardens across Pretoria are quickly coming back to life.

It is also one of the most important times of the year to give your garden the attention it needs for the months ahead.

Give Your Lawn a Fresh Start

After the dry winter months, lawns often look thin, uneven or tired. October is a good time to focus on lawn recovery.

Depending on the condition of the lawn, this may include:

  • Removing dead material and excessive thatch

  • Scarifying compacted areas

  • Applying lawn dressing or compost

  • Levelling uneven areas

  • Repairing bare patches

  • Replacing lawn where necessary

  • Regular watering as temperatures increase

A little attention now can make a significant difference to how your lawn looks throughout summer.

Feed the Soil, Not Just the Plants

Healthy gardens start with healthy soil.

Adding good-quality compost and organic material improves soil structure, helps retain moisture and encourages healthy root development. Flower beds can also be lightly cultivated to loosen soil that has become compacted during winter.

This is particularly important before the summer growing season gets into full swing.

Stay Ahead of the Weeds

Unfortunately, your plants aren't the only things enjoying the warmer weather!

Weeds can grow incredibly quickly once temperatures rise and summer rain begins. Removing them early prevents them from competing with your lawn and plants for water and nutrients — and helps stop them from going to seed and becoming an even bigger problem later.

Check Your Irrigation

Don't wait until your garden is struggling to discover that your irrigation system isn't working properly.

October is the perfect time to check sprinklers, irrigation lines and watering schedules. Look out for blocked or broken sprinkler heads, dry areas and unnecessary water running onto paving or roads.

Effective irrigation means healthier gardens and less wasted water.\

Prune, Shape and Prepare

Spring growth can quickly make hedges and shrubs look untidy. Regular trimming encourages healthy, controlled growth and keeps landscaped areas looking neat.

It is also a good time to remove dead growth and assess plants that may not have survived winter.
